Even the big businesses are scaling back by selling off properties like in the current situation of GM or cutting employees. For small businesses, saving money becomes important. Here are some tips on how to save money in your small business or the one you dream to own someday.

First of all, you can’t work if you don’t have a place to work from. If you have a small living space, try seeing if you’re local café or a place like Starbucks is a place where you can do business. The mobile office is extremely popular amongst many business professionals. With a laptop, your favourite portable office supplies and a cell phone you can get a lot done. If you don’t have these supplies already, try buying them second hand and the entire expense can cost you under $500 CDN.

If you have more space in your home, try setting up a home office in one of your rooms. It’s handy to have a fax machine, but there are programs like Efax (which is an email-based fax service) which can cut down on space in your office. Efax costs about $10 CDN a month. If your space is really small you can also cut down on a printer by going to Internet cafés to do your printing. You can always write off those printing costs. Some places in student areas print for as low as three cents a page.

No matter what size your office is, you will need furniture. Sometimes the government has warehouse sales on old furniture. You can always check out what people are throwing out on garbage days for furniture too and get it for free. Hang up those degrees on your wall for inspiration, pictures of the vacation you don’t have time to take and you’re ready to go.

The workload may be too much for you (feel fortunate) and you may need help. Try to see if you can call your local college or university to find students who are willing to intern with you for free or at a rate you can afford to pay. If you would prefer to work with someone more mature in age, put a free ad in your local newspaper because there may be someone out there who is looking to make a career change, get a good reference, an immigrant who wants new homeland experience or someone who just wants to improve their work experience. There are a lot of people looking for work and who do want to work.

Also keep in mind that if you’re looking for space to invite someone or a group of people to a meeting and you don’t want to bring them into your home for a variety of reasons, restaurants and cafés serve as a choice. If you pick one not far from where you live, this will cut down on your travel expenses if you can just walk there.
