Companies pay $80,000 for making non-compliant robocalls

OTTAWA-GATINEAU, April 2, 2013 — Today, the Canadian Radio-television 
and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced that Ontario 
Consumer Credit Assistance and Quick Connect Solutions have paid penalties of $69,000 and $11,000, respectively, to the Receiver General for Canada as part of a settlement over their telemarketing practices. Thesecompanies promote debt relief and consolidation services to Canadians.

In the late 1990s, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications
Commission (CRTC) decided that it would not intervene in Internet
services. There was enough competition to give Canadians choice. Internet
service providers set the rates paid by consumers, as well as other terms
and conditions, without having to obtain the CRTC’s approval.

OTTAWA-GATINEAU — Today, the Canadian Radio-television and
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved a new multilingual
television station to be called International Channel/Canal International
(ICI). The CRTC also approved an application by Rogers to acquire CJNT, an
ethnic television station, and authorized it to convert the station to an
English-language station.  

CRTC to examine future of 911 services in Canada

OTTAWA-GATINEAU, December 17, 2012 — Today, the Canadian Radio-television
and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced that it will examine
the future of 911 services in Canada. To prepare for the formal review in
2014-2015, the CRTC has appointed National Commissioner Tim Denton as an
Inquiry Officer and invites Canadians to share their views on how 911
services could be improved. Mr. Denton will report his findings to the
CRTC by the end of May 2013.

CRTC announces 2nd annual meeting of the International Do Not Call Network to facilitate cooperation on telemarketing enforcement

Today, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC) and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
welcomed three new enforcement agencies to the International Do Not Call
Network. Agencies from the Netherlands, Portugal and Japan attended the
network’s 2nd annual meeting, which was held on October 19, 2012.

CRTC denies BCE’s bid to acquire Astral

Today, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC) denied BCE’s application to acquire control of Astral Media’s
television and radio services because it is not in the public interest.
Astral Media operates 84 radio stations and 20 pay and specialty
television channels in both official languages.

Thursday, October 11, 2012, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC) launched a public consultation to obtain Canadians’ views on a new
code for retail wireless services, such as cellphones and other personal
mobile devices.  Following this consultation, a public hearing will begin
on January 28, 2013, in Gatineau, Que.  

CRTC to introduce new area code and 10-digit local dialing in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island

OTTAWA-GATINEAU, October 1, 2012 — Today, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced the addition of a new area code to remedy a shortage of telephone numbers in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island currently served by area code 902. The CRTC will also introduce 10-digit dialing in both provinces so that all local calls are routed to the correct area code.
 
Starting on November 30, 2014, customers requesting a new telephone number could be given a number starting with area code 782. Existing customers will keep area code 902 and their current telephone number.
 
The move to 10-digit dialing will begin in August 2014, and will be implemented gradually over the following weeks. During the transition, customers who dial seven digits will hear a message reminding them to include the area code for future calls, after which their call will be completed as dialed. Ten-digit dialing will be mandatory as of 16 November 2014.

CRTC approves new indie-rock radio station in Toronto

OTTAWA-GATINEAU — Today, the Canadian Radio-television and
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) granted a licence to Rock 95
Broadcasting, allowing it to launch a new radio station to serve the
Toronto market at 88.1 FM. Rock 95 will offer an English-language music
format with a focus on independent and emerging Canadian artists. Forty
per cent of the music featured on the new station will be Canadian musical
selections, of which at least 60 per cent will be from emerging artists.

Consumer cable bills to be adjusted with phase out of fund

OTTAWA-GATINEAU, July 18, 2012 —Today, the Canadian Radio-television and
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced that the Local Programming
Improvement Fund will be phased out by August 31, 2014. The contribution
to the Fund will be gradually reduced until it is discontinued. As a
result, the charge many cable and satellite companies have passed through
to their customers will be removed from their bills.

CRTC releases 2011 financial results for Canadian commercial radio stations

OTTAWA-GATINEAU, June 4, 2012 — Today, the Canadian Radio-television and
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) released statistical and financial
information on the 669 commercial radio stations operating in Canada. 
Revenues for the broadcast year ended August 31, 2011, increased by
approximately 4% over the previous year, demonstrating steady growth and
continued confidence in an industry whose revenues are now back to
pre-recession levels.
