OTTAWA-GATINEAU, April 3, 2013 — Today, the Canadian Radio-television 
and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced that Comwave Telenetworks Inc. has paid a penalty of $100,000 to the Receiver General for 
Canada as part of a settlement over its telemarketing practices. 
Comwave provides telecommunications services, such as home telephone, Voice over Internet Protocol telephone and long-distance services.

Studio Generates More Than $250 Million In Sales For Its Cannes Slate, Topping Last Year’s Company Record By More Than 50%

CANNES, France, May 22, 2013 /CNW/ – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF) continued to dazzle its International distribution partners with its lineup of films for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, achieving a Company record of more than $250 million in sales for nine titles that included MOCKINGJAY 1 and 2, the third and fourth installments of the global blockbuster HUNGER GAMES franchise, STEP UP 5 and upcoming Lionsgate and Summit titles such as DRAFT DAY, THE LAST WITCH HUNTER and Lionsgate UK’s A LITTLE CHAOS.

The record total surpassed last year’s mark by more than 50% and doesn’t include the expected revenue from territories where Lionsgate distributes directly, such as the UK, or through distribution partnerships such as its 50/50 joint venture with IDC in Latin America and its partnership with Universal Pictures in India.

25 New Double-Decker GO Buses On The Way‏

News Release April 3, 2013 Ontario Government Improving Public Transit The new Ontario government is helping more commuters take public transit with 25 new double-decker GO buses. The new buses carry 26 more passengers — 81 in total, up from 55. They are also lower than GO’s current double-deckers, allowing them to operate on 45 routes, which is 34 more than existing double-deckers can accommodate. The first bus will go into service tomorrow and will operate on GO’s Highway 407 routes. Remaining buses are scheduled to go into service by the end of May 2013. Investing in public transit is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to help reduce congestion, strengthen the economy and create jobs.

The Politics of Black Hair

ABSTRACT

 

What is so threatening about natural Black hair? This is something we are still aiming to understand although one of the researchers began the study at Concordia University in Montréal in 1997. The suggestion for studying Black hair came from two naturally Blonde women. We continue to do study in our PhD at OISE/University of Toronto. Back in the mid-1980s, watching Oprah’s bouncing and behaving hair was like a dream come true. We never knew that Black hair could do that. We rushed to a salon, telling them to duplicate the Oprah ‘do on our heads and they did. The bad part is that just like what once happened to Oprah, our hair fell out. We were left with no hair on our heads for a time to duplicate any ‘do. Now we have hair, different from First Lady Michelle Obama, but hair nonetheless. What is so threatening about natural Black hair? Even Michelle Obama must blow dry straight her natural hair to keep her hair so healthy, just like Oprah does.

 

Introduction

 

Nina Simone sings “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” however that song is first a traditional folk song potentially coming from Scotland (“Black Is the Colour (Of My True Love’s Hair),” 2013) and actually many of us have once thought our true soul mate was a bald man, even if it was Mr. Clean. But the inside love (that’s all of us) do have Black hair. Learning to love ourselves and our hair, however we choose to protect it, colour it, straighten it, weave it, love it, braid it, lock or dread it and ultimately embracing it, is a never-ending project. We have decided to make it our unofficial focus of study at the graduate and PhD level.

One of the researchers sits with some friends at a Montréal university pub in 1997 talking about what she often does – hair. One of them says to Donna, “why don’t you do research on hair?” Donna thinks she is crazy and that she will not ever find information on the topic. She does. Five pages worthy of a reference list for a master’s thesis done in two years.

As many Black women, and some Black men too, we have gone through quite a hair journey. We started off with our natural hair from birth and sitting between our mothers’ or fathers’ knees to get it combed and braided. We dreaded having our hair combed. This could be the reason why many of us do wear dreads and call them as such with Pride. We know more hair came out on the comb than what was actually on my head with the fine-toothed ones. Those combs are not made for curls boys and girls.

We would wear towels to simulate having White girls’ hair. Now, all we use a towel for is to dry the hair on our heads. We have heard that Whoopi Goldberg used to do this too. Many Black women have. When the Jheri curl became popular in the early 1980s, we begged our mothers or fathers or guardians to let us get “the Michael Jackson look.” Our parent/s, guardian/s allowed us to do so and because we hated going to the hair salon, our hair actually grew because we were barely combing it.

We wore the Jheri curl up until high school until we were introduced to relaxers through media. When we saw Janet Jackson in “The Pleasure Principle” video (“The Pleasure Principle (song),” 2013) with her swinging relaxed hair – we thought our pleasure principle relied on a relaxer.

We have all seen some of the friends we have or had, be successful with relaxers. When you have super curly hair from Mother Africa, this can be hard to achieve. Why should it be achieved? For whom? For what? Why? What is so threatening about natural Black hair? Some Black people’s hair is less super curly and can be straightened easily. This tends to be the case for many African-Americans which could explain why United States First Lady Michelle Obama’s hair does look good. So does super curly African hair.

Books by Lonnice Brittenum Bonner that we find while browsing through A Different Booklist or Accents on Eglinton in Toronto or Knowledge Bookstore in Brampton, Ontario inspire us to start using olive oil, jojoba, aloe vera gel and natural oils on our hair. We oil our hair, eat nutritious foods, exercise and ensure that the beauty of our hair is the crown to the beauty of our outer and the envelope to the beauty of our inner. However, the hair can be permanently locked as you may see with some Rastafarians or people who wear their hair in locks, or dreads, with Pride.

This brings us to today where many African people wear a variety of hairstyles, even the straightened ones, weaved ones, coloured ones, dreaded ones, wigged ones, braided ones, twisted ones and bald ones. Anything and everything goes because we are African people. Strong and proud and our hair does not define us – it is point of artistic expression as it is for all of humankind.

CLAIR, NB., May 18, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ – At a ceremony attended by more than 700 guests on Friday, May 17, Premier David Alward presided over the official opening of the Sunnymel chicken slaughterhouse and cutting plant in Clair, New Brunswick. News Release May 17, 2013 David Zimmer, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, issued the following statement today on the passing of Elijah Harper:”I am saddened to learn of the passing of Elijah Harper. Elijah Harper dedicated his life to public service and advancing First Nations issues — first as band Chief for Red Sucker Lake First Nation, then as a Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly and Manitoba’s Minister of Northern Affairs and Minister responsible for Native Affairs, and later as a prominent Member of Parliament. Mr. Harper’s actions during the Meech Lake Accord united First Nations and raised awareness of Aboriginal issues among all Canadians. Throughout his life, he was a strong voice for the advancement of Aboriginal Peoples and sought to improve relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Peoples to foster reconciliation, healing and understanding, which is something we should all strive for. On behalf of all Ontarians, let me express my sympathies to the family and friends of Elijah Harper.”

April 5 is National Caregiver Day: Show Canadian Caregivers You Care with an Award Nomination

Canada Cares and We Care Home Health Services to grant one caregiver $10,000 to fulfill a special wish  Toronto, Ontario – March 28, 2013 – Do you know a caregiver who deserves recognition? In a unique initiative, Canadians are being asked to nominate a family, friend or professional caregiver for a “best in Canada” caregiver award and explain what they would do with a $10,000 prize. Called the Canada Cares Caregiver Awards, the new initiative is being launched in celebration of National Caregiver Day, which takes place on April 5. It’s all part of an innovative program, called Canada Cares (www.canadacares.org), that supports and salutes caregivers of all kinds across the country. The awards, which will be presented at both a regional and national level, will recognize two exceptional caregivers – one family or friend and one health care professional – in Western, Atlantic and Northern Canada, as well as four exceptional caregivers in Central Canada. Synapse: Writing Insight From Gotham

Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. When film critic Roger Ebert died April 4, he was lauded for many things – his versatility, longevity, savvy, wit. But one virtue in particular stood out. As Chicago photographer Art Shay put it, “Even with movies he panned, he invariably found something worth going to see in them.” Take his review of a film that regularly made his “worst films” lists: Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy. Ebert called Sandler’s character “insufferable,” described the plot as an “exhausted wheeze of a sports movie formula,” and gave the film one star. Nevertheless, he praised the performance of actress Kathy Bates, writing that she “makes her character work as a comic creation, and knows the line between parody and wretched excess.” And he resisted the urge to hurl insults at Sandler. Instead, he wrote, “I suggest he (Sandler) is making a tactical error when he creates a character whose manner and voice has the effect of fingernails on a blackboard, and then expects us to hang in there for a whole movie.” What Ebert demonstrated in that review and countless others is what the critic Judith Crist called mutual regard, and she included it as one of her four essential elements of any good work of criticism. (The other three are passion, frankness, and specificity.) Mutual regard, she said, is showing respect for the creator of any work you’re evaluating, as well as respect for your readers. When Crist talked of mutual regard, you never suspected the notoriously acerbic critic was trying to tell other would-be reviewers, “You kids play nice.” Rather, she cautioned writers to balance their obligation to be honest, even blunt, about a work’s quality with their obligation to acknowledge the effort, and struggle, invested in it by fellow artists. In her famous review panning the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor-Richard Burton film Cleopatra, Crist identified a litany of its failures: The script: “a mélange of clichés and pompous banalities.” The sets: “Cardboard and paint.” Liz Taylor: “Fishwife.” But even though the movie was a four-hour epic that she called an “extravagant exercise in tedium,” she still found much to praise: the “lilting speech of Richard Burton;” the “fine performances” in minor roles by Roddy McDowell and Rex Harrison; the costumes that were “nothing short of sensational.” And she conceded some moviegoers would enjoy the film. “Certainly,” she wrote, “if you want to devote the best part of four hours to looking at Elizabeth Taylor in all her draped and undraped physical splendor, surrounded by elaborate and exotic costumes and sets, all in the loveliest of colors, this is your movie.” Though we don’t always identify it as such, mutual regard is something Gotham teachers train our students to use. When Gotham students are workshopping something, they must open their comments by identifying one thing that works in the piece they are reviewing. We don’t require this solely to put writers at ease in our classrooms, nor because writers often struggle to identify what works in their own writing, though both of those are true. We require it because mutual regard is essential to editing one’s own work, to reading the work of others, and to becoming a successful writer. Mutual regard shows that you recognize the inherent merit in creating a work of art. It gives readers a sense of where your standards lie, as it allows them to compare your evaluations of what works against your evaluations of what does not. And it lends you authority, by demonstrating that you have put thought into your evaluations, and weighed things fairly. We live in an age of ever-more criticism – a cursory search for reviews of Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, for example, yielded 40,900 results, and that doesn’t count the opinions we’ll hear on Facebook or Twitter or out to dinner with friends. Writers who manage to rise above the noise, as Crist and Ebert did, understand that mutual regard is key, because ultimately it cultivates between writer and reader something crucial – trust. The Care and Treatment of Sacred Things, Part I by Kelly Caldwell It’s usually the first question on the first day of my New York City Memoir workshops: “Can you talk… about drawing from your life experience to write, and discovering that which is sacred and off-limits material?” Only this time, it came not from a novice student, but through my iPod headphones from a veteran writer and host of the radio show, Writers on Writing (KUCI-FM, Irvine, California). And as Marrie Stone put the question to Molly Gloss, her novelist guest, she fused “sacred” and “off-limits” into a single term, winding the ideas together like the twin strands of DNA. I expect this concern in my level 1 workshops, from writers eager to tell their stories but unwilling to sacrifice something precious in the process. Hearing it posed by a professional like Stone, though, I knew: Not only fledgling writers believe that when something is sacred to you, writing about it could be sacrilege. (Continue reading.) Supporting Small Businesses in Eastern Ontario

News Release May 14, 2013 Ontario Government Fosters Regional Economic Growth to Create Jobs Premier Kathleen Wynne visited Anchor Concrete in Kingston today, where she highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting small businesses, allowing them to create more jobs and support regional economic growth. The new 2013 Budget includes an increase to the Employer Health Tax (EHT) exemption, which would bring relief to small businesses and make it easier for them to hire new employees. If the Budget bill is passed and proclaimed, the exemption would be increased from $400,000 to $450,000 beginning Jan. 1, 2014.  This would have a positive impact for more than 60,000 employers across Ontario, including 12,000 that would no longer pay EHT. The government is also supporting regional economic growth through initiatives such as the Eastern Ontario Development Fund (EODF) and the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund (SWODF), which support local companies, promote regional economic development and enhance Ontario’s overall economic competitiveness. Through the 2013 Budget, the government wants to create jobs and support regional economies, while helping people with their everyday lives.

QUICK FACTS If the proposed Employer Health Tax exemption is implemented, 88 per cent of Ontario private sector employers would not pay EHT nor incur the compliance costs of filing an EHT return. Since it launched in 2008, the EODF has helped to create and protect more than 14,000 jobs in eastern Ontario. The EODF was made permanent in October, 2012. Following the success of the EODF, the government launched the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund in October, 2012. It has helped to create and protect 2,200 jobs.

Minister Matthews Statement on Mammography in Ontario‏

Statement May 14, 2013 Today, Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, made the following statement regarding the release of a new study on mammography screening technology: A new peer-reviewed study by Cancer Care Ontario senior scientist Dr. Anna Chiarelli,   published today in the journal Radiology, shows that direct radiography (DR) mammograms and screen-film mammograms are better at detecting breast cancer than computed radiography (CR) mammograms. CR mammography is used for approximately 20 per cent of mammograms in Ontario. Ontario is committed to being a world leader in cancer care, which is why our government is making changes based on this new information and the advice of our experts. With the support of health care providers, Ontario will phase out CR devices across Ontario over the coming months. To support this transition, our government is making a $25 million investment to replace all CR devices with new DR devices to ensure women continue to get the most effective screening for breast cancer using the best technology available. Cancer Care Ontario has issued a request for proposals to procure new DR devices and clinics will also be able to choose to purchase replacements on their own. We will work with health care providers to ensure the best possible care for women over the transition period, and co-ordinate the replacement of CR devices to ensure that care needs are met. I want women to know that regular mammograms remain the best way to detect breast cancer, and that the chance of having an undiagnosed cancer using CR technology is extremely low. Women with questions about how the changes affect them are encouraged to contact the site where they were last screened, their primary health care provider, or Cancer Care Ontario.”

More Mental Health Support for College and University Students‏

News Release March 26, 2013 Ontario Government Moving Forward with Mental Health and Addictions Strategy Ontario is strengthening mental health services for postsecondary students across the province as part of its Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. Ten projects from across Ontario are moving forward in round one of the Mental Health Innovation Fund, including a province-wide, 24-hour-a-day, 365 days a year helpline to provide support for college and university students with mental health concerns. Kids Help Phone is working with postsecondary institutions on the service, which is expected to be in place within the next year. The new Ontario government is committed to providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place to help young people live healthy, successful lives.

QUICK FACTS The ministry will begin accepting proposals from colleges and universities for the second round of the fund later this year. Ontario is investing $27 million over three years to provide improved mental health services for postsecondary students. The support for postsecondary students is part of the multi-year $257 million Mental Health and Addictions Strategy announced in the 2011 Ontario Budget.

If passed, the Local Food Act would:   Increase local food awareness, access and sales by setting local food goals and targets in consultation with stakeholders Enable government to work with public sector organizations toward these goals and share information on their progress and results Proclaim a “Celebrate Ontario Local Food Week” that would begin the Monday before Thanksgiving Require the government to produce a local food report on its activities to support local food     The proposed legislation is part of a broader local food strategy that encourages the growth and development of markets for foods grown and made in Ontario, and provides funding for innovative and collaborative local food projects. Promoting local food is part of the new Ontario government’s plan to strengthen the agri-food industry, build stronger communities and create jobs that will grow the economy.

The Ontario agri-food sector contributes more than $34 billion to the provincial economy and employs more than 700,000 people.
