OSHAWA – The City of Oshawa’s six-week successful public awareness campaign opposing a proposed ethanol refinery by FarmTech Energy Corporation (FarmTech) on the shoreline of Lake Ontario has resulted in the delivery of the City’s 300-page comment submission to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa. Accompanying the submission are approximately 3,300 resident letters in opposition, as well as influential letters from the David Suzuki Foundation, Council of Canadians and Margaret Atwood. Following a successful preview, The City of Calgary today announced the official launch of the new search-based calgary.ca.
The website, which uses Microsoft SharePoint and Google search technology, was available for public preview from August 8 to 12. During the preview process, Calgarians were able to test the new site by typing in keywords to find relevant information. With the land that has been stolen from many Africans all over the continent, British rule of lands such as Botswana, it is not difficult for the lead character of The Trial of the Gods (Ontebetse, 2011) to answer the question: “Where is my homeland?” This work of fiction written by Khonani Ontebetse, an African journalist, tells the story of Jay Setlhare who battles with courts, gets the help of NGOs and human rights groups from all over the world and garners media attention by fighting to stay on his ancestral homeland – the CKGR in Botswana. Mary Louise McCarthy is a PhD student at OISE/University of Toronto, an Employment Counselor with the government of New Brunswick, a mother of an adult son, and a fifth-generation African-Canadian. This story was actually a mélange of truth and fiction. The reason why I chose to use the first person is because ultimately it was closer to truth than to fiction. I like the way in the course texts they discuss about using the first person, as well as actually at times using the writer’s name in the piece. It is much easier than coming up with names and a special part of creative non-fiction. It gives the reader more of a connection with the writer and helps the reader to know the writer knows what they are talking about. Read the rest of this entry »
