Diabetes has become a major health issue within the South Asian community in Canada
and around the world. South Asians have a significantly higher rate of type 2 diabetes
and tend to develop the disease much earlier (an average of 10 years earlier) than the
general population. South Asians also have a significantly higher rate of cardiovascular
disease and diabetes is a major contributing factor.
We will be bringing together members of the South Asian community for a day to:
- Share experiences and common lessons learned on opportunities and challenges
in diabetes and heart health management within the South Asian community.
- Learn how the South Asian community can prevent and manage diabetes while
improving their overall health.
Key Speakers Include: Dr. Zubin Punthakee (Diabetes and Heart Health for the Whole Family)
and Dr. Baiju Shah (Current Research on South Asian Canadians with Diabetes).
