Tips on Shopping for a Bike

In Business, cars, Entertainment, Environment, Health, Writing (all kinds) on March 5, 2009 at 1:23 PM

A bike is a terrific way to get around, especially when the weather gets warmer. Some people even ride their bikes during the winter and this can save on lots of money when it comes to transportation. Here are some of the ways you can save on buying a bike:

l Try looking on websites like Kiiji and Craigslist for people who are giving away bikes. If you do not mind buying a bike that is used, you can find terrific deals there

l If you are buying a new bike, try to go to a specialty shop, rather than an all-purpose store such as Canadian Tire to get your bike. You will probably save a lot more money

l Always make sure you invest in a good lock and a great helmet. It is actually more important to have a good lock and a great helmet than a top of the line bike

l There are so many types of bikes to choose from, such as city bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes, racing bikes and old-fashioned style bikes. Make sure you do your homework and find the type of bike that will best suit your needs and lifestyle

l If you have a child and would like to take her or him along for the ride while you are biking, try to buy a bike carrier that is aluminum, you can find some at great prices around $60 CDN. An aluminium carrier makes it easier to carry the extra weight while you are riding since it is a lighter material.

Not only is owning and riding a bike a great way for inexpensive transportation, it is also terrific exercise too. You can really “pimp your ride” by adding a light, some storage space and a bell. Make sure you make it your own and really enjoy your purchase. Don not forget about how important locks are to keeping your bike safe, as well as helmets for preventing brain injuries in case you fall.

Enjoy the ride! Plus if you would like to read more about transportation stories by me, Donna Kakonge…you can buy my book My Story of Transportation that can be purchased online at: http://stores.lulu.com/kakonged.
